A useful cabinet plan begins with the room as it exists. Record walls, openings, services, appliances and anything that affects door or drawer movement before turning dimensions into modules.
BEFORE YOU START
Use a simple, repeatable method.
You do not need a finished technical drawing to begin. A tape measure or laser measure, pencil, paper and phone camera are enough for a first room record. Use millimetres throughout so the sketch, appliance details and cabinet list use the same unit.
Draw the room shape
Sketch the walls from above and label each wall. Mark doors, windows, openings, columns, bulkheads and any change in wall direction. Give every measurement a clear start and finish point rather than writing loose numbers beside the drawing.
Photograph each wall and the wider room. Photos help explain pipes, power points and obstacles that are difficult to show on a sketch.
Measure at more than one point
Measure wall lengths near the floor and near benchtop height. Check ceiling height in several locations. Existing rooms are not always square, level or plumb, so a single dimension can hide a variation that matters during fitting.
- Record dimensions in millimetres.
- Keep overall wall dimensions as well as smaller segments.
- Do not deduct fillers or installation tolerances yourself unless the final plan calls for them.
- Label uncertain measurements for rechecking.
FIXED POINTS
Map what the cabinets must work around.
Water, waste and power
Mark each service from two fixed references. Confirm changes with the relevant licensed trades.
Actual models
Use manufacturer dimensions for the refrigerator, oven, cooktop, dishwasher and other selected appliances.
Obstacles
Record architraves, skirting, pipes, meters, vents, columns and anything projecting from a wall.
Door and drawer movement
Check nearby handles, appliance doors and walls so fronts can open without colliding.
Delivery route
Note stairs, lifts, narrow entries and site access that may matter when the order is delivered.

Capture the room in four passes.
Overall
Measure each complete wall and the floor-to-ceiling height.
Segments
Break walls into corners, openings and clear sections; check the segments against the total.
Services
Locate plumbing, waste, power, gas and ventilation from fixed reference points.
Appliances
Add exact model dimensions, connections, ventilation and operating clearances.
CHECK BEFORE ORDERING

Reconcile the sketch
Add the smaller wall segments and compare them with the overall measurement. Recheck any mismatch. Confirm that opening widths plus their distances from corners make sense and that all measurements use the same finished surfaces.

Keep final verification separate
A planning measure helps build a cabinet list, but critical dimensions should be checked again before supply or installation. Changes to plaster, flooring, services or appliances can alter the available space.
